Disney is looking for young men – more specifically, ways to appeal to Gen Z men.
Variety reports that, according to multiple sources, Walt Disney Studios executives have been pushing hard in recent months to find movie pitches that will bring young men back to the brand “in a meaningful way”.
Young men in this case are defined as Gen Z (13-28 year olds), people the trade says were “hampered in their formative years by lockdowns” and are “lonely, gaming-obsessed” types, which is blatantly dismissive.
They add that Disney has been calling for original concepts to lure the demo to the movies – seeking new IP and pitches such as “splashy global adventures and treasure hunts”. Essentially, they want more “Pirates of the Caribbean” style franchises.
Part of the reason for this shift is that the works that used to bring in young men – namely Marvel and Star Wars – have been shedding their audiences in recent years.
Disney has had success with Millennials and the studio’s live-action film adaptations, but Gen Z is trickier to draw real interest.
