DJ and music producer Diplo has joked that he previously dated both singer Katy Perry and her rumoured new beau, former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
Appearing on a recent episode of the Smart Girl Dumb Questions podcast, Diplo, whose real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, quipped that he dated Trudeau, but that the experience “was a weird one”.
The 46-year-old “Lean On” hitmaker was talking to podcast host Nayeema Raza about the “horny” Canadian city of Montreal, when Raza said that Canada’s new prime minister Mark Carney is “hot”.
“And now Katy Perry is dating Justin Trudeau. Pretty fire,” Diplo retorted.
“I know so many people who like…” Raza continued, before Diplo interrupted her to finish her sentence: “…dated Katy Perry? Like me?”
Raza then questioned Diplo on whether he had actually dated the “Woman’s World” singer, and he confirmed that he had.
The musicians were briefly suspected to be dating back in 2014, after they were spotted together at US music festival Coachella.
Raza then said that she meant meant she knew people who had dated Trudeau, to which Diplo responded: “Oh, I did date Trudeau too. That was a weird one though.”
The podcaster then prophetically suggested that Diplo’s remarks would go viral. Despite the interview first being published in early October, it only started doing the rounds on social media this weekend, thanks to Diplo’s Trudeau remark.
“Why? He’s a prude isn’t he?” Raza continued, leaving Diplo to joke: “I’m not in[to] the positions.”
“I call him ‘Prudeau’. I think he’s hot,” Raza added.

Later in the episode, the podcast clarified that Diplo was joking about having dated Justin Trudeau.
Before being romantically linked to Katy Perry last month, Trudeau was married to former TV host Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. The pair separated in 2023.
What has Diplo said about his sexuality?
Diplo has previously given a coy response when asked about his sexuality, saying that he’s “not not gay”.
Appearing on Emily Ratajkowski’s podcast High Low back in 2023, the “Where Are U Now” musician said that he had received oral sex from men in the past.
He told Ratajkowski that he isn’t “aroused by men that much” but that he’s “not not gay”.
“I’m sure I’ve gotten a blow job from a guy before… For sure. 100 [per cent], yeah,” he said.
“I’ve gotten a lot of blow jobs, but I don’t know,” he said. “I mean, getting a blow job is not that gay, I think,” he continued, adding that he doesn’t want to “define” himself as gay, but there “are a couple guys… I could date, life partner-wise”.
In 2019, the music star said that he “might be gay” after a plane he was on was forced to make an emergency landing.
“Dear Columbus and Minneapolis, my jet window just cracked open and the pilots are wearing masks so I’m not sure I’ll make it to my show tonight,” he wrote, adding: “Also I never told you this but I might be gay…”
Diplo previously lauded queer musicians for “changing the way music exists”.
Last year, he kept his LGBTQ+ followers fed by posting a fully nude thirst trap to mark Pride month.
