Digital Eclipse explains why the Genesis and Mega Drive versions of UMK3 aren’t part of the Legacy Kollection… for now

During an interview with MK Secrets, we learned from Dan Amrich of Digital Eclipse why Mortal Kombat Gold wasn’t being included in the Legacy Kollection. For that same reason, we’re also not getting Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.

However, eagle-eyed fans were able to take notice of the fact that the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 also weren’t being included in the Legacy Kollection. This is odd considering that there are plenty of other versions of UMK3 and Genesis Mortal Kombat games in the Legacy Kollection.

As such, it’s pretty clear that the Genesis version of UMK3 is being excluded for reasons different to that of Mortal Kombat Gold or Shaolin Monks. Those titles won’t be part of the package as the developers aren’t prepared to emulate games from the PlayStation 2 era.

“Okay. I will be completely honest,” begun Amrich asked about this odd exclusion. “We do not have permission to use it right now. We did ask for it, and we realized that we have the Super Nintendo and the Genesis or Mega Drive versions of each of the core games except for that.”

From here, Amrich acknowledges that Digital Eclipse would be more than capable of emulating the Genesis version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and want to, but they effectively ran out of time to get it in.

“I actually went back and went to bat for this. There are issues around it that we don’t have the correct permissions.

“We’re hoping that one day that might change. But right now, they were like ‘We can’t get it in time. We can’t promise it. We shouldn’t promise it.'”

While the Genesis version of UMK3 won’t be included with the launch of the Legacy Kollection, it sounds like it’s possible it might be added as DLC later down the road. Of course, this will depend on the Legacy Kollection performing well commercially.
