Diamondbacks trade Randal Grichuk to Royals during game

The Arizona Diamondbacks have traded Randal Grichuk to the Kansas City Royals, azcentral’s Nick Piecoro first reported on Saturday.

In the top of the fifth inning of D-backs vs. Pirates in Pittsburgh, fellow Arizona players and manager Torey Lovullo were seen hugging Grichuk when the news appeared to break.

In return, Arizona received prospect reliever Andrew Hoffmann, a member of the Royal’s Triple-A affiliate, Omaha Storm Chasers.

Hoffmann, the 14th-best Royals prospect per 2023 MLB rankings, will be assigned to Triple-A Reno, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Grichuk had a mutual option for the 2026 season after signing a one-year deal for $5 million in February.

In 69 games for the D-backs this season, Grichuk batted .243 and had 22 RBIs, 23 extra-base hits and 10 walks. He played all three outfield positions and was primarily a designated hitter (39 games).
