Beyoncé did not let her “Cowboy Carter” tour ride off into the sunset without allowing Destiny’s Child to ride again, too. The crowd for the closing show of the tour in Las Vegas erupted when Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland stepped out on stage alongside Beyoncé near the end of the night for a medley that included a couple of the beloved girl group’s greatest hits.
The trio had not reunited since a similar group cameo when Beyoncé headlined Coachella in 2018 (pictured above). The members of Destiny’s Child went separate ways after a blockbuster run that ended with a final tour in 2005, and they’ve only come back together for a handful of quick reunions over the last 20 years.
Their joint appearance Saturday night came about 40 numbers into the show, when the threesome shocked fans by coming out in unison to perform the 2004 track “Lose My Breath.” They then stuck around for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” number “Energy” — specifically, nailing the song’s “mute challenge” and bringing special life to the line “just me and my crew – big energy!” The wrap-up of the four-minute cameo, perhaps inevitably, was a joyously received resurrection of their signature smash “Bootylicious.”
The headliner did not offer any great preface to the group’s reappearance, with her fanfare amounting to: “Destiny’s Child, bitch.”
Rowland was clearly having some fun during the “mute challenge,” putting her finger to her lips in a shhh gesture and mouthing the words, “Shut up.”
Bey buffs did have reason to imagine that the group might put in an appearance at some point on the tour, given how friendly they’ve remained over the years, although it took some patience before Destiny was fulfilled on the 32nd and last stadium concert of the “Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin’ Tour,” which began in late April.
Although it was hardly a public appearance, in January, they joined together for a group rendition of “Happy Birthday” at the 50th birthday party for Rowland’s husband, talent manager Tim Weatherspoon. And while it didn’t involve a performance, all five original members came together for the premiere of the “Renaissance” concert film, followed by Beyoncé and Rowland turning up for Williams’ opening night on Broadway in “Death Becomes Her.”
Any fans who had faith that Beyoncé would pull out something special for the closing night of the tour also had their faith rewarded when Shaboozey came out on stage to recreate their “Cowboy Carter” duet of “Sweet Honey Buckin’.” Not coincidentally, presumably, Shaboozey was wearing American flag pants that invoked a look Destiny’s Child once rocked on stage. He had previously performed with her at her NFL halftime show on Christmas Day last year, but not until now on this tour.
Her husband, Jay-Z, also joined her for the tour finale, although he had done so on some previous dates, so his Vegas cameo was not quite as much of a rarity. He came out on stage for “Crazy in Love” and his own 2011 hit “N—-s in Paris.”
