Colorado head coach Deion Sanders announced Tuesday he’s planning to undergo a procedure to alleviate pain in his left leg.
It appears that the procedure will be minor as Sanders told reporters he’s hopeful of returning to work by Wednesday:
Fans were alerted to something being wrong with the Hall of Fame cornerback when he removed his left shoe while on the sideline during the Buffs’ 35-21 loss to TCU.
Sanders said in his postgame press conference he was concerned about clotting issues in his leg.
“I think I got more blood clots. Cat’s out of the bag, alright,” he told reporters. “I think I got more blood clots. Man, it doesn’t make sense. I’m hurting like crazy. I have a doctor’s appointment on Monday. So that’s what’s going on. I’m not getting blood to my leg. That’s why my leg is throbbing. I’m sorry to get that out, but thank you for noticing.”
The 58-year-old said his clotting is hereditary. In 2021, doctors removed two toes on his left foot, and continued problems led to considering amputation of the foot altogether in 2023.
Additional health challenges forced Sanders to limit his day-to-day involvement at Colorado for a portion of this past offseason. He later revealed he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer before having his bladder removed and being declared cancer-free.
Colorado’s next game is Saturday at home to No. 22 Iowa State. Then, the Buffs are off for a week before traveling to play Utah on Oct. 25. They’re off to a 2-4 start and are 0-3 in Big 12 play so far.
