After landing with the San Antonio Spurs at the NBA trade deadline in February, De’Aaron Fox has a new contract.
The star point guard inked a four-year, $229 million max contract with the Spurs, agent Rich Paul told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Fox was previously on a five-year, $163 million deal that he signed with the Sacramento Kings. That contract would have made him a free agent after the 2025-26 season.
A few months after being traded to San Antonio, Fox said he hoped to sign a new contract with the team over the offseason. He reiterated that point in June.
Though the Spurs have two promising young players in their backcourt already, they made it clear this offseason that they wanted Fox around for a long time.
“When we made that trade, we knew what the contract status was, of course,” a Spurs executive told Spotrac’s Keith Smith in July. “We see De’Aaron as someone who can grow with our young players and be a real leader for us. We’re hopeful we can make something happen to keep him in San Antonio for a long time.”
The Spurs landed Fox in a three-team trade with the Kings and Chicago Bulls before the trade deadline. Sacramento got Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko and a handful of picks in the deal while Chicago ended up with Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter and a 2025 first-round draft pick.
In 17 games with the Spurs, Fox put up 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
San Antonio paired Fox alongside one of the best young players in the league, Victor Wembanyama, with hopes that the duo can lead the Spurs to their first championship since 2014.
Unfortunately, the Spurs’ plans faced a setback when San Antonio had to shut down Wembanyama for the home stretch of the 2024-25 season because of a blood clot in his shoulder. Luckily, the Spurs “are optimistic” that Wembanyama can be back on the court for the start of the 2025-26 season.
San Antonio will also bring in a pair of young, exciting prospects after the NBA draft in No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper from Rutgers and No. 14 overall pick Carter Bryant out of Arizona.
The core of the team is Fox and Wembanyama, but the Spurs will look to the rookies to contribute early as the team searches for its first playoff appearance since 2019.
Fox has continued to elevate his game over the past few years and is now seemingly on a roster that gives him a chance to compete for a championship for the first time in his career. Now having signed a new deal, the Spurs’ plans for the future will be centered around Fox as well as Wembanyama.
