Three-term D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will not run for reelection, she announced in a social media post Tuesday.
“With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term,” she said on X.
“For the next 12 months, let’s run through the tape and keep winning for DC.”
Her decision was first reported by The Washington Post.
The mayor of D.C. is not subject to term limits. But with Bowser’s decision official, Democrats are already seemingly scrambling to replace her. Several City Council members are reportedly considering a run, including Kenyan McDuffie and Janeese Lewis George.
The candidates who might enter the race will likely represent varied perspectives on how D.C. government should handle business interests, community policing and other issues facing the city — and would have great sway over the federal district’s future if elected.
Bowser has led the city for over a decade and through a number of tumultuous periods, most recently as President Donald Trump has deployed National Guard troops across the city and as thousands of federal workers lost their jobs as a result of Trump’s trimming of the federal government.
The decision comes as Bowser accomplished one of her top priorities this year, bringing the Washington Commanders back to D.C. The City Council approved the $3.7 billion stadium deal in September.
“I know we’ve laid the groundwork for others to build upon,” Bowser said in a video posted alongside her announcement.
