It’s week two on Dancing with the Stars, or as host Alfonso Ribeiro proudly reports, “the most watched entertainment show in America!” Hmm, we’ll see if they can sustain that after tonight, especially since Jimmy Kimmel Live! is returning after several nights off the air.
No one went home on premiere night so Tuesday’s scores are combined with week one. The theme for week 2 is “One-Hit Wonder Night” and judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who called in sick last week, is back to scour the performances for frowned-upon lifts. Which two couples are going home first?
Actor/musician Corey Feldman with Jenna Johnson. Feldman was confused and hurt by the judges and their scores after week one, so he was eager to make things “spicy” this week. His cha cha to “Baby Got Back” lacked timing and general finesse, but the staging and back-up dancers made it super entertaining to watch. Don’t send him home just yet, America! He’s the hot mess we need right now. “Sometimes, its not about what we say, its not about our scores, its just about being memorable,” said Derek Hough. “My friend, that was memorable.” SCORE: 24 out of 50
Comedian Andy Richter with partner Emma Slater. Heavy lies the pressures of a loser; he went into tonight wrestling with the reality that he was on the bottom of last week’s leaderboard. He upped the cuteness factor in his tepid tango to “It’s Raining Men” by kissing Slater’s arm and winking to the camera. It worked! “Andy, you truly capture the essence of why this show was created,” Hough said. “We see the joy and the hard work put into it. I hope to see you next week.” SCORE: 25 out of 50
ANDY RICHTER/Eric McCandless
NBA All-Star Baron Davis with Britt Stewart. Davis got to reunite with his high school basketball coach before he got busy with an uneven samba to “Return of the Mack.” He was able to recover but it wasn’t enough for an apologetic Carrie Ann Inaba. “That was tough because you made a mistake and it took you out of it,” she said. “I liked the vibe but then you lost it.” SCORE: 28 out of 50
Pentatonix singer Scott Hoying with Rylee Arnold. Hoying’s cha cha to “Blue” ended the two-hour show but it wasn’t quite the show stopper it should have been. The beats in the song certainly didn’t help. “Well done. Focus intent, your timing was better,” said Tonioli. “Your consistently through the routine was better. Keep going this way.” SCORE: 28 out of 50
Reality TV star Dylan Efron and Daniella Karagach. Efron couldn’t say “choreography” during rehearsal but he did figure out how to roll his hips during his bouncy samba to “Macarena.” “In all of my 20 years of judging this show, i’ve never seen a contestant like you,” said Inaba. “You are a bit of a beginner but those hips are expert level. It’s not just thrusting. There is motion in the ocean!” SCORE: 30 out of 50
JULIANNE HOUGH, DANIELLE FISHEL, PASHA PASHKOV/Eric McCandless
Danielle Fishel (Boy Meets World) with Pasha Pashkov. The actress had a hard time slumbering after her week one mistakes, and now she’s expected to do a cartwheel into splits after tearing her hamstring? As a result, the actress seemed to take it easy during her cha cha to “Rhythm of the Night” but the judges still appreciated her efforts. “You had just the right amount of the spice to get me going,” said Bruno Tonioli. SCORE: 31 out of 50
Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles with Ezra Sosa. The gymnast was the first celebrity this season to bring out the time-honored fringe pants for an excellent, cheesed-up diva jive to “Maniac.” “You remind me of one of my favorite performers of all time, Tina Turner,” said Inaba. SCORE: 32 out of 50
Elaine Hendrix with Alan Bersten. The actress got a special visit from singer Toni Basil (who rocked a killer animal print beret) before pulling on the cheerleader costume and performing an adorable jive to “Hey Mickey.” Special thanks to the audience, who kept the spirit alive by shaking pom-poms of their own. “Elaine I am so impressed with your dancing. You are an amazing performer,” said Hough. “That was a really difficult routine. Watch the hands and the arms sometimes on the turns.” SCORE: 33 out of 50
Jen Affleck (The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives) with Jan Ravnik. The Morman parent wants to represent “all the moms out there” because she joined the show after having a baby two months prior. I call foul; she’s only 26, y’all! She can run a marathon tomorrow if she wants. Anyway, her quickstep to “Take On Me” was more than fine, though Inaba was triggered by the off-the-ground shenanigans. “You’re very good, I really like what you are doing,” said Inaba, before adding, “Jan, be careful about the lifts. I want to make sure you know the difference.” SCORE: 34 out of 50
Social media personality Alix Earle with Val Chmerkovskiy. It’s hard to take one’s eyes off of Chmerkovskiy in a sexy yellow suit, but Earle’s jive to “Mambo No. 5” was polished enough to open the show and have Hough call her and Chmerkovskiy a “powerhouse partnership.” “That was incredible!” said Inaba to Earle. “You blew me away. You are such a great performer.” SCORE: 34 out of 50
Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui with Brandon Armstrong. Armstrong appreciates that his partner has lots of stage presence, which only accentuated their elegant foxtrot to “Lovefool.” “There is something very mesmerizing about the way you dance,” said Inaba. “It’s very easy, it puts people at ease.” SCORE: 34 out of 50
Author and influencer Hilaria Baldwin and Gleb Savchenko. Baldwin moved gorgeously in her purple gown while tango-ing to “What is Love.” No hubby tonight in the audience but her kids were there; in fact, the whole clan moved to Los Angeles from the east coast to support mama in the ballroom. “You better calm down with that tango, that was incredible!” said Hough. “The frame was beautiful. Gorgeous arms, fantastic. Well done.” SCORE: 35 out of 50
Whitney Leavitt (The Secret Lives of Morman Wives) with Mark Ballas. Leavitt thinks her and Ballas are “blowing up the internet,” especially after Tonioli meant to give her an 8 on night one but held up a 7 instead. That’s not the only reason; she has a hella partner in Ballas, and a real talent for shaking her tail feather in her cha cha to “Wild Cherry.” “I’m gonna tell you you are definitely not a one hit wonder,” said Tonioli. “You are a hit machine. That was a killer cha cha! The amount of content you put in. And it was so fast! It was literally nuclear power.” SCORE: 37 out of 50
Wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin with Witney Carson. Irwin is still beaming from premiere night, saying it was “one of the funnest nights of my life.” Now he’s got another one to be proud of: his tango to “Move your Feet” had him mouthing the words and preening to the crowd. Must be nice to be an early favorite! “Robert, in leading man mold!” said Tonioli. “Powerful. You don’t need gimmicks. You’re good.” SCORE: 37 out of 50
Final three were Davis/Stewart, Feldman/Johnson and Baldwin/Savchenko. Davis and Feldman were sent home. Feldman felt bad; his partner just won the Mirror Ball trophy in season 33, after all.
Next week is TikTok night.
