Crimson Tide, Tigers fans both react to Auburn football claiming national titles

Auburn, it was announced Tuesday, will recognize seven additional national championships, bringing the program’s total to nine.

The additional titles are claimed because each championship represents an Auburn squad which was awarded the national championship through a particular poll or service.

The new titles include 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993 and 2004, adding to the already recognized titles in 1957 and 2010.

College football fans were quick to react on AL.com’s social media’s post about the news.

“Good, if Bama can recognize the 1933 Betty Crocker Cookbook poll, then we should be able to claim a few more as well.” – Joe Mattingly

“And they called me crazy when I wore my 2004 national championship shirt to work last week.” – Kiaro Melton

“As a bama fan this is almost as pathetic as tearing goal posts down or throwing toilet paper ….hilarious.” – Tim Beasley

“They still don’t have more than their big brother lol! Roll Tide!” – Chris Hawkins

“Yes that’s how championships were crowned in football back then, but don’t you think there’s a timetable to recognize such things?” – Logan Ball

“Alabama claims 18 but ESPN and every national record recognizes 15 so. A majority of ours are legit. We don’t wait 100 years to claim something. Roll Tide.” – Riley Garrett Mason

“Using that Alabama math …” – Steve Armstrong

“As a Bama fan, the last 4 are pretty legit because Auburn was undefeated and robbed of competing. PreWW2 the natty was decided by the Rose Bowl so those first three are not legit.” – Nathan Glen

“lol for y’all to bring this back up is like UCF claiming they have a natty. – Spencer Ziegler

“I’m not sure about the others but 83 absolutely they should be the national champions. that championship was flat out stolen from Auburn. There is no reason that Miami should be recognized as national Champion in 83.” – Mike Bowma

“As a Bama fan I agree that the 2004 season claim is valid. 1993 is a bit of a reach. They were sanctioned that year and didn’t play any post season ball.” – Ben Duncan

“Go roll Toomers Corner to celebrate!” – Mike Foley

“After a cursory glance through the record books, in my opinion, the 1913, 1983 and 2004 claims could be argued as legit. However, in 1910 and 1914, Auburn wasn’t even the best team in the conference. In 1958, they were on probation and the second team in the conference. In 1993 probably the best team in the country regardless, but on probation. In the grand scheme of things, none of this means anything, but it is fun to talk about. Also, my opinion and 6 bucks will get you a small coffee at Starbucks. War Eagle!” – Joe Mattingly

“If you can’t win them might as well claim them. lol” – Troy Knox

“I mean the updykes have two where they didn’t even finish in the top 20.” – Trey Lowery

“Bama lives in that head rent free.” – Tiffany Staubitz

“I love all these side walk alums from bama with their Walmart shirts commenting on an Auburn page about how they live rent free in our heads. I wish I had time to troll your pages. (Actually I don’t though.) I can’t read half of what y’all type anyway. War Eagle!” – Kelli Simpson Patterson

“I’m Bama to the bone and this doesn’t bother me at all.” – Stan Bradford
