The Dallas Cowboys and Micah Parsons don’t have a contract extension agreed to yet.

With the season approaching, a trade might even be in the works, based on new reporting from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dan Graziano and Todd Archer.
Their new story revealed something else interesting, though:
The Cowboys offered Parsons a five-year deal worth $40.5 million per year, or $202.5 million in total value. That was early in the offseason.
The problem?
Owner Jerry Jones offered it directly to Parsons, without his agent in the room. And that’s not how it’s supposed to work in the NFLPA’s collective bargaining agreement with the league.

“When Parsons issued his trade request on Aug. 1, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team would not trade him,” ESPN’s insiders wrote. “Jones believes the Cowboys had an agreement with Parsons on a five-year extension that averaged $40.5 million per season, per league sources. The Cowboys have not made any offers since.”
There’s still no clarity on whether Parsons’ agent is now involved in the process, as Jones has seemingly brushed him off at every turn.
“What is not clear is whether Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, has been granted permission to speak to teams regarding a contract extension,” ESPN’s insiders wrote. “A team making a deal would want to at least have the framework of an agreement in place before making a trade with the Cowboys.”

If Dallas had that previous $40.5 million per year framework in place before, it’d need a raise now. T.J. Watt got a deal from the Steelers worth $41 million per year, and Parsons is basically certain to set the new non-QB annual average value record.
It’s just not clear whether it’ll be the Cowboys giving him that money.
