Singer Hayley Williams is setting the record straight on the lyrics from one of her songs.
Williams, the lead singer for Paramore who released a solo album in July, says the “racist country singer” lyric in the album’s title track, “Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party,” is a reference to country music superstar Morgan Wallen.
She made the confirmation Tuesday during an interview for the New York Times’ “Popcast,” according to USA Today.
“I’m always talking about Morgan Wallen, I don’t give a s—,” Williams says in the podcast, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Find me at Whole Foods, bitch, I don’t care.”
Williams says the lyric, “I’ll be the biggest star / in this racist country singer’s bar,” actually could refer to “a couple” of country music singers. Williams now lives in Nashville and said in August she hates bars in the city owned by country singers, emphasizing she believes Wallen’s is the worst, TMZ reports.
USA Today reports that in 2021, Wallen was criticized after a video surfaced of him using a racist slur. He released a statement of apology and met with Black organizations to discuss the scandal, USA Today reports.
The controversy has not slowed down Wallen’s career as he has become one of country music’s biggest stars. He performed two concerts at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland in August.
“In case you live in a cave, Wallen over the last decade has made quite the career singing mostly about good love gone bad, heavy drinking and sometimes how love went bad due to drinking,” cleveland.com’s John Benson says in his review. “In many songs, he’s trying to forget about how the good love went bad.”
Meanwhile, Williams’ solo effort received a five-star review from NME.
“As with almost every era of Hayley Williams’ career, this new release has come with questions about the future of Paramore,” the review says. “The determined lyrics on the tender ‘I Won’t Quit On You’ should be all the reassurance worried fans need, but if that’s not enough, there’s plenty in this brilliant, swaggering new chapter to be excited about.”
