A Central New York college graduate has been identified as one of the four people killed in a recent NYC shooting.
Julia Hyman, a 27-year-old Cornell University alumna, was shot and killed Monday on the 33rd floor of the Midtown skyscraper at 345 Park Ave. in New York City, according to the building’s owner Rudin Management.
Police say the gunman was Shane Tamura, a former high school football player who was allegedly targeting the NFL’s offices elsewhere in the building. Tamura blamed his mental health problems on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) injuries from playing the sport, according to a note in his wallet.
The New York Post reports Tamura, who used an AR-15-style rifle in the attack, also killed three people in the lobby of the building: Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, NYPD officer Didarul Islam, and security guard Aland Etienne. An NFL employee was also wounded but survived.
Investigators said Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas casino security worker, planned to kill people at the NFL’s headquarters but took the wrong elevator to the wrong floor in the building. His note accused the National Football League of concealing dangers of concussions to players’ brains for profit.
Tamura killed himself after shooting Hyman, police said.
Hyman had been working at Rudin as an associate since November, according to her LinkedIn page. She graduated in 2020 with a degree in hotel administration and management from Cornell’s Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, N.Y.
Kate Walsh, dean of Cornell’s hotel administration school, told the Post that Hyman was “an extraordinary student whose academic achievements and intellectual curiosity made a lasting impression.”
“Julia’s passion for real estate led her to pursue a minor in the field and build a successful career after graduation,” Walsh said.
Rudin Management mourned the death of Hyman and the other victims.
“The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy,” the company said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost last night, including our cherished Rudin colleague, a brave New York City police officer, a beloved lobby security guard and an employee at a tenant firm.”
“As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured. “We are grateful to the NYPD, FBI, EMS and multiple other emergency responders for their swift and courageous action.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the shooting an “unspeakable act of violence.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said stronger gun laws are needed to prevent future mass shootings and similar tragedies.
“We gather to mourn the lives stolen in yesterday’s tragedy. We stand with their loved ones, honor their memories, and demand a future free of gun violence,” Hochul said Tuesday as she attended a multi-faith prayer vigil. “New Yorkers always rise together — united in compassion, strength, and resolve.”
