READING, Pa. – West Nile virus continues to cause concerns in the Berks area, after mosquitoes in several areas test positive.
“That’s very concerning about viruses,” says Aamiah Switon, Reading.
Over at city park, during a friendly game of basketball, worry unfolds.
“It’s actually very concerning, because like being outside is like a fun activity, and I don’t want it to harm me in any relationship with any form, shape or way,” says Jalen Whaream, Reading.
Officials say mosquitos in Reading and Shillington tested positive for West Nile Virus.
“I don’t even like it. I don’t even like bugs like that. But now, knowing there’s viruses going around that’s very concerning. I’ve had some broad spray,” Switon says.
The West Nile Virus is most commonly spread through a bite from an infected mosquito. Fortunately, most people infected with West Nile virus do not feel sick. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness, according to the CDC.
And while the current risk of transmission is low, officials say continued virus activity could require an adult mosquito control, known as truck spray, in the affected area, the city says.
“I might stay home,” Switon says.
The city says residents are encouraged to:
– Stay indoors during dusk-to-dawn mosquito activity hours.
– Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes outdoors.
– Use insect repellent containing at least 30% DEET.
– Remove standing water from their property to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
According to the CDC, symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.
There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat West Nile virus disease.
