The film chronicles the life of Christy, raised in West Virginia, who earned herself a basketball scholarship to college. After dominating “Toughwoman” contests in the late 1980s, she began training with Jim Martin and launched a highly successful pro boxing career in the sport’s early days.

However, her public success was a stark contrast to her private life. She married Jim, who was 25 years her senior, and their codependent relationship spiraled into a cycle of drug abuse, financial ruin, and physical and psychological abuse. Just as Christy is making historic strides in her sport, she’s forced to contend with a horrendous private life — climaxing in an act that nearly kills her.

Black Bear will release the film theatrically in the U.S. and it hits screens November 7 in time for awards season.
