Chris Pratt supports in-law RFK Jr., but they don’t talk politics

Chris Pratt won’t hash out the intricacies of public health policy over Thanksgiving dinner with his in-law Robert F. Kennedy Jr. But that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate the Health and Human Services Secretary’s “success.” 

“I’ve spent a number of occasions hanging with him in a strictly family dinner kind of vibe, and I really got along with him well. I think he’s great,” Pratt shared on Monday’s episode of Bill Maher‘s Club Random podcast. When Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, he became a Kennedy, in a way. Schwarzenegger’s mother is Maria Shriver, the daughter of Eunice Kennedy, who was the sister of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Sr., making her RFK Jr.’s aunt. That makes Pratt and the Donald Trump appointee cousins (first cousin once removed, to be precise) by marriage.

The Jurassic World star admitted, “It’s not like I sit with Bobby and I go, ‘So hey, let’s talk about this, let’s talk about it.’ It’s like, we’re just playing cards, or playing mafia, or having fun, or having dinner. I’m not going to pick his brain to find out exactly which of those things are true,” he said of claims about the politician’s controversial public stances on subjects like vaccines, COVID, and HIV.

“I don’t know what to believe,” Pratt told Maher. What the Guardians of the Galaxy actor does know is that he’d “hate to be so mired in hatred for the president that any success from his administration is something I’d be having an allergic reaction to.”

“For the most part, I wish him well, man,” Pratt expressed. “I hope there’s certain things that he oversees that seem to be supported in a bipartisan way, like getting terrible toxic stuff out of our kids’ food. I think that’s a great thing. So if you just do that, that’s amazing.”

The voice of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Garfield in Garfield then imagined an individual so opposed to the current Trump administration that they would defiantly vow, “I’ll put Clorox in my children’s cereal myself.”

To that individual, Pratt offered a word of caution: “Be reasonable here. There’s certain things that would be a good thing to have. I want them all to be successful.”

Though Katherine Schwarzenegger urged her followers to vote for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, the couple have remained more or less apolitical since Trump resumed office in 2025.

Last year, Pratt authored an essay on his mother-in-law’s website advocating that voting Americans not focus on the question of, “‘Did your candidate win or lose?’ but rather, ‘Will you wake up the next morning and help an old lady move?'” He faced backlash that same year for endorsing Rick Caruso, a businessman and former registered Republican in a run for Los Angeles Mayor, citing “the city’s gradual decline into pain and utter disarray.”

Kennedy, meanwhile, has moved to implement policies that align with Pratt’s characterizations, including waging a war on unhealthy and processed foods.

But he’s also come under repeated fire for moves like implementing massive staffing cuts, canceling contracts for life-saving vaccines, and eliminating public comment in HHS decisions, meaning he’d receive no feedback from the millions of Americans directly impacted by his decision-making.
