Oscar-nominated writer/director Celine Song is joining in on the buzzy nostalgia trend: The “Materialists” filmmaker is set to write a sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”
The 1997 film starred Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz in a throuple from hell. After Roberts’ character learns that Mulroney’s is about to get married to his picture perfect fiancée (Diaz), Roberts sets out to stake her claim…and ruin the nuptials. It makes sense for Song to take on the IP, as she made her feature debut with “Past Lives” and recently released “Materialists,” both films that dealt with exes reappearing to wreck emotional havoc. To note, this will be Song’s first foray into the two women, one man dynamic trope, though.
Collider first reported the project. “My Best Friend’s Wedding” sequel is in early development at Sony Pictures. Song is not in talks to direct, though. IndieWire has reached out to Sony for comment.
In addition to “My Best Friend’s Wedding 2,” Song is developing e-sports drama series “Damage” for HBO. “The Last of Us” series creator Craig Mazin will executive produce.
Song’s directorial debut “Past Lives” was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Original “My Best Friend’s Wedding” star Mulroney previously teased a possible sequel to the New York Post. “The Hunting Wives” actor said, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard ‘lawyers were talking.’”
Other recent reboot films from the late ’90s and early 2000s have been “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (now in theaters), “Freakier Friday” (in theaters August 8), and “The Devil Wears Prada” (now in production). All three films have the original casts returning; since their respective debuts, “Freakier Friday” star Jamie Lee Curtis and “The Devil Wears Prada” actress Anne Hathaway have both won Oscars. Of course, “The Devil Wears Prada” icon Meryl Streep also landed an addition Academy nod for her turn as Miranda Priestly in the first film. Hathaway will additionally be reprising her career-making role in the third “Princess Diaries” feature; the first film was her screen debut.
