Bungie Admits Destiny 2 Ash & Iron Power Climb Feels “Way Off,” Promises Immediate Fixes and Reward Buffs

Bungie admits Destiny 2’s Ash & Iron power progression is broken. The studio is rolling out immediate reward buffs, score changes, and Prime drop boosts, starting this week.

Destiny 2’s Ash & Iron update went live earlier this week, and it brought back the Plaguelands, introduced a new activity called Reclaim, and dropped a big balance pass, fixing some things in the Portal. But what was meant to be a major free update quickly turned sour as players ran into a mix of bugs, poor rewards, and what many described as the “worst update” the game has ever seen.

The loudest complaints have been around Power progression. After hitting 450 Power, players found themselves stuck in a slog, earning only +1 gear from -40 to -60 activities. Bungie already acknowledged the problem earlier this week, and now, in the latest This Week in Destiny blog post published today, the studio has revealed exactly what it plans to do to fix it.

Bungie Details Power Progression Changes and Rewards Buffs Coming to Destiny 2

In today’s blog article, Bungie said, “When Ash & Iron went live earlier this week, many of you quickly hit the new expanded power band of 450+ and started reporting that it felt off… way off. We fully agree.” The devs say they’ve been monitoring feedback closely and are working on both immediate changes this week and a bigger patch next Tuesday, September 16.

To address the biggest pain point, progression between 450 and 500 Power, Bungie is tweaking how Portal rewards scale based on your score grade. Here’s what’s changing in the Live Update expected by the end of this week.

Portal Power reward changes (coming this week)

For the Platinum band (450–500):

  • A+ and A grades now give +2 Power
  • B+ and B grades now give +1 Power
  • C+ grades will give gear at your current Power (no upgrades)

For the Gold band (400–450):

  • B grades will now give +1 Power, and C+ grades will give gear at your current Power

For Silver (300–400):

  • C+ grades now give +1 Power

Bungie is also lowering the score requirements by “reducing the number of modifiers needed to reach score forecasts” and “granting everyone the Featured Gear score bonus by default.”

Reward Buffs In Fireteam Ops

Next Tuesday, September 16, Bungie will release update 9.1.0.1 in Destiny 2 that will improve the Portal rewards in the Fireteam Ops activity. Here’s what’s changing:

Prime Engrams will:

  • All power bands: Players will have a chance for a Prime Engram drop per Portal Activity completion reward.
  • From 450 to 500: Power increased up to +3 power (was +2).

Fireteam Ops is also getting more loot per completion, with many activities bumped up by +1 and +2 rewards. Check out the full rewards table below.
