Browns’ Shedeur Sanders is ‘day to day’ after sustaining oblique injury in practice

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders sustained an oblique injury early in a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday and was held out for the rest of the session, according to the team. The Browns said Sanders is day to day and will not practice Thursday, and he is unlikely to play in the preseason game Saturday against the Eagles.

Sanders’ injury comes after the rookie’s impressive preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers on Friday and adds to a list of quarterback injuries for the Browns.

Sanders started the preseason opener and played 45 snaps because the Browns only had two quarterbacks available: Sanders and emergency addition Tyler Huntley, who signed with Cleveland on Aug. 5 and flew with the team to Charlotte later that day.

If Sanders doesn’t play Saturday in Philadelphia, the Browns will either play Huntley the entire game or start rookie third-rounder Dillon Gabriel, who missed the preseason opener due to hamstring tightness. Gabriel, who was limited in select drills over the Browns’ three previous practices, was a full participant on Wednesday.

Asked after practice on Wednesday if his hamstring is 100 percent, Gabriel said, “We will know here soon.”

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t commit to any playing time plans before practice Wednesday — and before Sanders’ injury — because he said he needed to see how these joint practice sessions with the Eagles would go for Gabriel.

Kenny Pickett has been dealing with a hamstring injury that dates back to the first week of training camp. Stefanski said Wednesday morning that Pickett would still be limited to just 7-on-7 in practice.

Joe Flacco, entering his 18th season in the NFL, has been receiving the bulk of the No. 1 reps and appears to be the leader to begin the season as the Browns’ starter. However, he was never slated to play in the first two preseason games.
