Broncos’ Dre Greenlaw suspended for threatening referee after thrilling win over Giants

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was suspended one game by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct after he was seen going after a referee following the Broncos’ comeback win over the Giants on Sunday.

In its announcement, the league said “Greenlaw chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field.”

Video shared by CBS News Colorado’s Alex Wilcox showed the moment in question, which occurred just after Broncos kicker Wil Lutz hit the game-winning field goal and the entire Denver team ran onto the field to celebrate.

The official was clearing away from the pandemonium when Greenlaw is seen walking toward the ref and yelling something at him.

Greenlaw could be seen running after and continuing to yell at the ref before he pulls out a yellow penalty flag and throws it, while Que Robinson comes over to move Greenlaw away.

Greenlaw is planning on appealing his suspension, according to the Denver Post, though he could still face a fine even if the suspension is overturned.

He would be able to return to the roster for the Nov. 2 game against the Texans, meaning he would miss next week’s game against the Cowboys on “Monday Night Football” while also being out $192,778.

The Broncos, who are 5-2 this season, played the first six weeks without Greenlaw on the roster due to thigh injuries.

Sunday, in his first game back in the lineup, he played 21 snaps in the win over the Giants and made some big hits.

“That’s how I play the game, man,” Greenlaw said. “I love hitting people. I love my job. I love what I do.”

Greenlaw signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Broncos in March.
