The Denver Broncos and wide receiver Courtland Sutton agreed to terms on a four-year, $92 million contract extension Monday, multiple league sources told The Athletic.
The new contract, added to the final year of his current deal, extends Sutton’s tenure with the Broncos through the 2029 season.
Shortly after Monday’s practice, Broncos coach Sean Payton said the Broncos were “real close” to a new deal with the 29-year-old wide receiver, the team’s second-longest tenured player behind offensive tackle Garett Bolles. Denver finalized it less than an hour later.

Both sides expressed confidence that a new deal would come together this offseason, as the team’s top target approached the final year of the contract he signed with the Broncos in 2021.
Sutton worked out away from the team during its offseason program last year as he angled for a new contract. The Broncos adjusted his 2024 salary to include a handful of incentives, most of which Sutton hit after a season in which he caught 81 passes for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns, while helping to lead the Broncos to their first playoff appearance since 2015.
Negotiations this time stretched into training camp, and Sutton did not take reps during team periods at Monday’s practice as the final details were being finalized for the deal.
Sutton, a second-round pick of the Broncos in 2018 from SMU, has caught 18 touchdowns in the last two seasons. He has also been voted a captain for the Broncos during each of the previous four seasons.
“He’s clearly one of the leaders on our team,” Payton said. “There are a lot of things he brings to the table.”
Sutton is the fifth homegrown player the Broncos have signed to an extension in the last 12 months. Denver signed offensive guard Quinn Meinerz and cornerback Pat Surtain II to four-year contract extensions during training camp last year. It also added new deals for outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper and Bolles during the season.
Now that the Broncos have finished a deal with Sutton, attention can turn to other extension-eligible candidates. Three of Denver’s top four sack leaders in 2024 — Nik Bonitto (13 ½), Zach Allen (8 ½) and John Franklin-Myers (seven) — are entering the final season of their respective contracts and are looking for new deals.
Monday, though, was Sutton’s day. He was a critical part of the support around Bo Nix during the quarterback’s rookie season in 2024. His 7.94 targets were the most of any season in his career, as were his 81 receptions.
“He sets an example for that room that you’re gonna show up, you’re gonna practice, you’re gonna practice hard, and that will translate to playing hard,” Nix told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel during an appearance on “Scoop City” after Monday’s practice.
“He does a great job off the field taking care of his body,” Nix added. “He’s a great leader. You just know what you’re going to get out of him. He’s just so consistent.”
Sutton has now earned three contracts with the Broncos despite playing with nearly a dozen starting quarterbacks since entering the league. He is now entering the 2025 season with the same play-caller and starting quarterback for the first time in his career.
“He’s set up for a great year,” Nix said. “I’m excited for him.”
