Brock Purdy questionable for Thursday vs. Rams due to toe soreness, 49ers optimistic

After making his return Sunday from a two-week absence due to a toe injury, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will be questionable to play Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams because of toe soreness, general manager John Lynch said Tuesday morning.

“We will take every precaution to make sure Brock’s all right,” Lynch said on KNBR radio, adding that Purdy had follow-up MRI exams on his toe. “I think he is. Now it’s just a matter of, can he turn it around on a short week?”

Coach Kyle Shanahan said following Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that Purdy was 100 percent healthy, but on Monday morning, the coach said Purdy told him Sunday night that the toe was bothering him. Purdy was listed as a non-participant on Monday’s injury report, which was solely an estimation, as the 49ers will practice only once (a walk-through on Tuesday) ahead of the Thursday night game at SoFi Stadium.

Thursday’s winner will lead the NFC West at 4-1.

The 49ers won’t issue official game statuses on the injury report until Wednesday, but Lynch said Purdy and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who injured his knee against the Jaguars, will be questionable.

Purdy hurt the toe during the season opener in Seattle on Sept. 7, playing every snap despite the injury. He missed the next two games, with backup Mac Jones going 2-0 as the starter, before returning Sunday against the Jaguars. He struggled with accuracy and, at times, was not on the same page with his receivers, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble as San Francisco suffered its first loss of the season, 26-21.

Jones was limited throughout practice last week after aggravating a preseason knee injury in the Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He dressed as the backup against the Jaguars but did not play, as Purdy took all 66 offensive snaps.
