Britney Spears Uses Bizarre Dance Video to Announce She’s a New Mom

In a winding Instagram post on Sunday, Britney Spears wrote that she’s adopted a baby girl, Lennon London Spears.

The post was accompanied by a video of Spears dancing in a pink bathing suit and top hat.

The caption to the video, “I need coffee and I want to let you guys know I adopted a beautiful baby girl!!!”, alongside a series of emojis and miscellaneous thoughts.

She did not reveal a photo of the baby girl, but she did write that “Lennon today has on [sic] adorable dress” which supposedly said “I’M NEW HERE” on it.

Other topics covered in the caption included Spears’ workout habits (she wrote that she hadn’t exercised in years), people “talking trash” about her, and her plans to move to Italy.

Fans of the pop star reacted with trepidation to her announcement, given her recent spate of erratic behavior, while E! News speculated that the announcement was just a tease.

But Spears, 43, had hinted that she wanted to adopt a child in January of this year in a since-deleted Instagram post. And the name “Lennon” wouldn’t necessarily come out of nowhere: Britney’s ex-husband, Sam Asghari, dressed up as John Lennon for Halloween in 2023, months before their divorce was finalized.

Spears took over the news cycle again in 2020, years after her meteoric rise to pop stardom, due to her years-long fight to escape a restrictive conservatorship imposed by her father. Since the conservatorship ended in 2021, Spears hasn’t restarted her music career—her last live performance was in 2018.

Spears has two sons, Sean and Jayden, with her first husband, rapper and DJ Kevin Federline. The princess of pop originally shared custody of her children with Federline, but her psychiatric confinement in 2008 led her to lose custody. Her sons were estranged from Spears during recent years, after moving to Hawaii with Federline.

In 2022, Spears announced that her and Asghari were expecting a child, but Spears suffered a miscarriage a month later. She announced that pregnancy with a circuitous Instagram post similar in tone to her post on Sunday.

TMZ reported earlier this month that Spears tried to light a cigarette on a flight from Mexico back to Los Angeles earlier this month. She also engaged in a spat with flight attendants on the plane, leading a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer who met her on the tarmac to speculate that she “obviously didn’t take her meds.”

Spears’s representatives at Creative Artists’ Agency didn’t respond to an immediate request for comment, nor did her publicist. The Daily Beast has made a public records request to the Los Angeles Department of Family and Child Services.
