The first round of the final major championship of the golf season is now behind us, and Scottie Scheffler is right in the mix.
The top-ranked golfer in the world posted an early 3-under 68 and entered the clubhouse at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland just a shot off the lead. By the end of the day, though, there were five golfers — Jacob Skov, Olesen, Haotong Li, Matt Fitzpartick, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Harris English — tied for the lead at 4-under.

Scheffler was tied up with Matthew Jordan, Tyrrell Hatton and Buddhist monk Sadon Kaewkanjana at 3-under. Rory McIlroy, who has been the overwhelming fan favorite on the course this week, is already playing much better than the last time Portrsuh hosted the event in 2019. That year, McIlroy famously hit his drive on the first hole out of bounds, made a quadruple bogey eight and then missed the cut. He bogeyed the first this time, so he’s already off to a better start, and finished at 1-under.
While there is still a full round left, there are several big names who have a bit of work to do to make the cut. Most notably among that group is Bryson DeChambeau, who fired a 7-over to drop nearly down to the very bottom of the leaderboard. Patrick Reed, Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa and Brooks Koepka weren’t much better.
The second round of the British Open will kick off at 1:35 a.m. ET on Friday.
