Borderlands 4 was released last week across all platforms, and fans are loving what Gearbox has created. However, the experience hasn’t been smooth for everyone, as some PC players have been facing performance issues. The worst part is that even those with top-tier hardware are running into problems like FPS drops and stuttering, which is extremely frustrating. Luckily, it seems the developers are finally releasing a patch to address it.

Improvements are on the way

Developers recently confirmed they have been reading “every piece of feedback” and are aware of PC players running into bugs and crashes. They added that updates to improve stability and performance have started rolling out, with one of them coming today (September 18). The official post also mentions they are testing a Field of View slider option for consoles, with more details to be shared soon.

We’re reading every piece of feedback you share. Some of the things we’ve already begun to take action on are:

  • We know some PC players are running into bugs and crashes. We hear you. Updates to improve stability and performance already started rolling out over the weekend and another is coming this Thursday. This is our top priority.
  • A Field of View (FOV) slider option for consoles is in testing right now and more information is coming very soon on that. Some console players have reported concerns with performance and we’re investigating those with planned updates coming.

To thank players for diving into the game, the developers have also decided to give everyone the Break Free Pack, which includes one Vault Hunter Skin usable by Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe, one Legendary Ripper Shield, and two ECHO-4 Drone skins. You can claim the reward by going to the in-game SHiFT menu in Borderlands 4 and entering the following code: JS63J-JSCWJ-CFTBW-3TJ3J-WJS5R.

Performance issues in Borderlands 4

Before the official launch, early tests showed that FPS in Borderlands 4 could drop to only 30 without frame generation enabled on an RTX 4080 – one of the most powerful consumer GPUs on the market, albeit from last-gen. Many believed such issues would be fixed after release, but nothing really happened in a big way. In fact, the game currently has mixed reviews on Steam, and most of the negativity stems from poor performance.

Ever since the performance complaints started appearing, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has been actively engaging with fans on X, defending the game. For example, he recently said that Borderlands 4 is a “premium game made for premium gamers,” and those with weaker systems should simply use Steam’s refund option.
