Originally, all content from Black Ops 6 was planned to carry over to Black Ops 7 so that people could maintain their progress between games. That decision has since been reverted.
For most games, this would seem like a huge win. People who already have heavily customized their guns would get to keep their favorite weapon, and people who bought skins would get to show them off for another year.
However, Black Ops 7 will now be giving everyone a clean slate. Due to mass backlash from the new direction for Call of Duty and the prominence of over-the-top event skins, the devs have decided to leave everything behind.
This new direction was so controversial that many CoD fans are happy that they’re getting less content with Black Ops 7 than they would’ve normally had.
Black Ops 7 walks back carry forward progress from BO6
Call of Duty has been getting experimental with skins for a while now, putting pretty much anything you can think of in the game. Whether it be actual professional athletes and celebrities, Beavis and Butt-Head, or American Dad, Call of Duty has Fortnite levels of brand crossover happening in Black Ops 6.
However, people who prefer the more serious, battle-hardened tone of previous CoD games aren’t huge fans of watching a bong-smoking weed lizard zip around the battlefield while crouch cancelling.
So, the devs have decided to rescind their decision to make everything from BO6 carry over and have instead made Black Ops 7 its own independent game.
“Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapons from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry forward into Black Ops 7,” the blog post reads.
“Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting. That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7.”
Their phrasing begs the question of whether or not Black Ops 6 is an “authentic” CoD experience, seeing as removing that content from the next entry in the series will make BO7 more authentic in their eyes.
However, not all hope is lost for those who do like these cosmetics. Warzone will keep all the skins and give Black Ops 6 players a chance to show off if they’re keen on playing the Battle Royale.
The devs explained this decision by saying the following: “Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you.”
The blog also details that they’re going to be putting renewed effort into anti-cheat to hopefully make running into cheaters less common. They’re also planning to reveal more information on the upcoming Zombies, Multiplayer, and Campaign changes coming this November when BO7 launches.
