Met with the news of Brent Pry’s firing last Sunday, Hokies defensive tackle and senior captain Kelvin Gilliam delivered a message to teammates in the Virginia Tech meeting room that couldn’t be misinterpreted.
“I opened up the door and said, ‘You want to leave, leave, because whatever we do, we need guys that are bought in,’” he said. “Maybe that’s one of our issues that we had the last three [games] — guys were one foot in, one foot out.”
It didn’t look that way Saturday. Though unwise to map out the rest of this team’s season based on a single result against an FCS team, and a struggling one at that, the Hokies at least looked energized and interested in a 38-6 win against Wofford at Lane Stadium, starting Philip Montgomery’s run as interim coach on the right foot.
Neither energy nor interest seemed to be in high supply in losses against Vanderbilt and Old Dominion the last couple of weeks, so that’s at least a step in the right direction.
