Let’s face it, Sunday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens was electric and was the best game of the weekend. It wasn’t even close. Sure, there were other good games, but this matchup lived up to the hype and it had one of the best endings (if you’re a Bills fan).
However, it was a very bumpy game for the Bills for most of the time. After the Bills went up 7-0 early in the first quarter, they were playing catch up the entire time until the clock hit zero at the end of the fourth. In the last four minutes of the game, we saw the Bills being down by 15 points and with discipline (as well as a little bit of luck), they stunned the Ravens for a 41-40 win.
There was one Bills play that really stood out in the crucial moments, but it was from a player that you may not have expected from; rookie tight end, Jackson Hawes.
Jackson Hawes impressed in his Bills debut vs. Ravens
The Bills drafted Hawes this past April out of Georgia Tech in the fifth-round and he is mostly a blocking tight end. With Buffalo having Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid, Hawes wasn’t expected to be a contributor in the passing attack. However, he made one of the biggest plays of the night with a 29-yard reception to put the Bills at Baltimore’s 1-yard line to make it a one score game.
That play came after Ed Oliver forced a fumble from Derrick Henry and the Bills recovered it.
Hawes had just that one catch, but it was a massive one. He also helped the Bills with his blocking abilities to the point where he earned a PFF grade of 93.7 and was ranked the highest rated rookie from Week 1, per Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus.
Despite only playing 16 snaps for the Bills, per PFF, Hawes showed off and made a big play that led to a Bills touchdown late in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback. This recognition shows us that the “everybody eats” mentality is still there and that the Bills don’t care who makes the big play but just as long as someone does it.
