Biggest takeaways from Week 1 of Detroit Lions training camp

The Detroit Lions just finished the biggest gauntlet of the offseason. Eight training camp practices in 10 days. Outside of the schedule around Thanksgiving—where they’ll play three games in 12 days—there may not be a more physically demanding period on the NFL calendar for the Lions.

But during that stretch, with all eight practices open to the media, we have learned so much about the 2025 Lions. From the decisions being made at center to training camp battles at defensive line, safety, and so much more, there’s has been a wealth of information coming from Allen Park over the past week and a half.

So on this week’s PODcast, we go through everything we’ve learned about the team in the initial days of training camp. Our discussion includes;

  • Is the starting center job now claimed?
  • What position, players have been the biggest surprises?
  • Who is a roster bubble player who is making a strong case for the 53-man roster?
  • Which position is still the hardest to project?

Then we turn our attention to Thursday’s preseason opener—our first opportunity to see the Lions’ depth players compete in an actual game situation. Here are the topics we discuss for the Hall of Fame Game.

  • Which position group are we going to be paying the closest attention to?
  • Is there anyone who can cement their status on the 53-man roster with a good performance?
  • Which player cannot afford a poor game vs. the Chargers?
  • Which position are we hoping shows a ton of depth on Thursday?

Finally, we discuss an event to help out one of our own. POD writer/editor Alex Reno’s niece is currently going through a serious medical condition, and we’d love to do everything we can to help out his family, who is currently by her side 24 hours a day in an extended hospital stay. The Renos are holding a bowling fundraiser on Sunday, August 10 from 1:30 p.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET at Oak Lanes in Westland, Michigan. $35 gets you a couple games of bowling, shoe rentals, pizza, and pop. There will also be auctions for prizes. You can also just donate directly to the family at @IzzyReno on Venmo if you’d prefer to help that way.

If you want any addition info on the event, feel free to reach out to me personally.
