Bear Bachmeier enjoyed an impressive BYU debut, and now he has some hardware to show for it.
The young Cougars quarterback has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for Week 1, the league announced in a Tuesday statement.
In his first collegiate appearance, Bachmeier — the first true freshman QB to ever start a season opener for the Cougars — completed 7 of 11 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns in BYU’s 69-0 rout of Portland State. He also ran five times for 32 yards and two additional scores.

Bachmeier started a bit slow against the Vikings, opening his night just 2 of 5 in passing for nine yards. He eventually heated up and finished strong, ending the first half on a 5 of 6 passing stretch with 89 yards before being pulled at halftime.
“I think he did a great job,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said of Bachmeier. “Once he got hit I think he settled down. He had good demeanor and great presence out there and I think the guys felt great about how he handled things.”
Other local Big 12 award winners were new Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, who was named the conference’s co-Offensive Player of the Week, along with the Utes’ offensive and defensive lines being recognized as the best such units of the week.
Bachmeier will look to follow his memorable debut this Saturday as the Cougars host Stanford — the program Bachmeier transferred from just a few months ago.
