Base model iPhone 17 may be more powerful than previously suggested

Back in May, analyst Jeff Pu suggested that while the iPhone 17 Pro models would get an A19 Pro chip, and the iPhone 17 Air would get an A19, the base model would get the same A18 chip as the iPhone 16.

In a note seen by 9to5Mac, Pu now says the supply chain evidence suggests he was wrong, and that the base iPhone 17 will get the same A19 chip as the Air – but with one significant difference …

Previous report

We’re of course expecting Apple to introduce a new A19 chip for this year’s iPhones, and precedent would see the base model iPhone 17 get the standard A19 while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max would get a beefier A19 Pro. It also seemed likely that the iPhone 17 Air would get the non-Pro version of the chip.

Apple analyst Jeff Pu initially concurred with this expectation. However, back in May he said that the base model iPhone 17 would instead get the same A18 chip used in the iPhone 16.

Base model iPhone 17 to get A19 chip

In a new report, Pu reverses himself, stating that the base model does now look set to get the A19 processor.

We now expect the iPhone 17 model to be equipped with A19 (vs. earlier expectation of A18).

But with one significant difference

It’s expected that Apple will this year bump the RAM of the two Pro models from 8GB to 12GB, and that the iPhone 17 Air will also benefit from this upgrade. However, Pu says that the base model iPhone 17 will remain at 8GB.

12GB DRAM LPDDR5X for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, 12GB LPDDR5 for iPhone 17 Air, and 8GB LPDDR5 for iPhone 17.

He’s reiterated other expectations for this year’s models, which include an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip.
