The directorial debuts of comedian Aziz Ansari, “Euphoria” breakout Maude Apatow, “Succession” star Brian Cox and “Split” actor James McAvoy will world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Ansari’s action comedy “Good Fortune,” Apatow’s coming-of-age comedy “Poetic License,” Cox’s British drama “Glenrothan” and McAvoy’s musical biopic “California Schemin’” are among the new additions to the TIFF lineup. Other films that will host world premieres at the annual Canadian-based gathering include Alex Winter’s “Adulthood” and Bobby Farrelly’s “Driver’s Ed.”
Meanwhile Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” a wrestling drama starring Dwayne the Rock Johnson and Emily Blunt, and Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” will have their North American premieres at TIFF. Those movies have yet to announce where the world premieres will take place, though it’s likely the Venice Film Festival.
TIFF also announced that several movies that already debuted at other film festivals including Cannes and Sundance, such as Scarlett Johansson’s “Eleanor the Great,” Gus Van Sant’s “Dead Man’s Wire,” Mary Bronstein’s “If I Had Legs Id Kick You,” Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident,” Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” will make their way to the Six.
Canadian director Anne Émond’s “Peak Everything” will be this year’s closing night film on Sept. 13. As previously announced, “John Candy: I Like Me,” a documentary about the late comedian from director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds, will open the 50th edition of the festival on Sept. 4. Other films on the schedule include “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” Chloe Zhao’s Shakespearean drama “Hamnet,” Channing Tatum’s action comedy “Roofman,” Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers” and Nia DaCosta’s “Hedda.”
“As Toronto prepares to welcome the world, these selections signal a festival season defined by cinematic excellence, star-studded red carpets with crowd-favorite Hollywood and international talent, and those marquee moments on and off the screen that have defined TIFF for the past five decades,” TIFF’s organizers said in a press release.
