SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Atlanta Falcons previously ruled out three starters in Friday’s game report, and was waiting to make a game-time decision on two more.
Falcons starting right tackle Jake Matthew (ankle) and wide receiver Darnell Mooney (hamstring) are active for Atlanta in Week 7’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. Both were originally listed as questionable Friday when edge rusher Jalon Walker (groin), nickel Billy Bowman Jr. (hamstring) and receiver Ray-Ray McCloud (not injury related — other) were all ruled out.
This means Matthews will make his 184th consecutive start for Atlanta. He already holds the record in Falcons franchise history, and has the longest streak among active players. That streak will continue despite the fact Matthews left Week 6’s win vs. the Buffalo Bills. He missed the entire second half. Matthews and head coach Raheem Morris said all week long that the expectation was to get Matthews back in time for another prime-time bout.
The Falcons also got good news on Mooney, who missed Monday’s game with a hamstring injury. This is a major boon for the Falcons offense as McCloud continues to be a healthy scratch for Atlanta. Asked about McCloud’s status Friday, Morris said the issue was not a disciplinary action.
“I sent him home,” Morris said Friday. “An excused absence. We are working through some things that are private with the young man, and we will get those things figured out. … This is between Ray-Ray, the organization and us. I wouldn’t say it is a disciplinary thing. More a football thing with something we have to get straightened out.”
