At least two people have been killed and five others have been injured in a Sunday morning shooting in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said officers were dispatched to the 6800 block of Shore Terrace just after 2 a.m. following a report of a person shot.
“Officers arrived and located five victims who all sustained injuries consistent with gunshot wound(s),” police said in a news release. “The officers on scene rendered aid.”
Two of the victims were pronounced dead on the scene and the remaining three were taken to area hospitals, according to police.
“Subsequently, officers received a report of a person who walked into a local hospital with a gunshot wound and an additional victim who walked into an area fire station, both sustained injuries consistent with gunshot wound(s),” police said. “It is believed that they both were shot in the 6800 block of Shore Terrace.”
A preliminary investigation revealed that a disturbance had occurred before the shooting, police said. Police did not clarify what the nature of the disturbance was.
No one is in custody in connection with the incident at this time.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is asking the public to avoid the area. The identity of the victims is pending notification of next of kin.
“The Marion County Coroner’s Office will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death,” police said.
This shooting comes hours after another incident where a 34-year-old man armed with a gun threatened employees at a McDonald’s on 2425 E 38th Street. Officers responded to the scene at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and confronted the suspect, which led to an officer-involved shooting, according to police. The suspect was not struck by the gunfire.
“The suspect fled from the business, and officers pursued him down a nearby alley. He was safely taken into custody near 39th Street and Tacoma Avenue,” police said.
One uninvolved vehicle was struck by gunfire, police said, but “no uninvolved community members were injured” in the incident. Police said that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
In a statement, Chief Chris Bailey said the suspect fired a shot in the direction of two officers, but “their training brought the situation to a safe resolution.”
Bailey also commented on the overnight shooting incidents as a whole, saying he understands “how nights like this can shake our sense of safety.”
“My heart is heavy after the violence the Indianapolis community experienced over the last 24 hours,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and all who were impacted by the violence.”
