Diego Borella, an assistant director for Netflix’s hit show “Emily in Paris,” died on Thursday on set. He was 47.
At the time, the series was filming its fifth season in Venice, Italy, at the Hotel Danieli.
According to local news outlet La Repubblica, Borella unexpectedly collapsed on set during filming. Medics arrived around 7 p.m. on Aug. 21, but were unable to save him. He reportedly suffered a heart attack, per the outlet.
Production was temporarily put on pause, but resumed on Saturday, Aug. 23. The series was initially expected to wrap filming on Monday, Aug. 25, but may be delayed due to Borella’s death.
According to Venice health officials, per The Independent: “Our ambulance arrived at 6:42 p.m. Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end all efforts proved fruitless. At around 7:30 p.m., he was pronounced deceased.”
Borella was born in Italy and worked in Rome, London, and New York throughout his career. He wasn’t very active on social media, but shared a few photos of himself on Instagram in Italy, including one of himself outside Venice’s University of Disaster.
Two days before Borella’s unexpected death, “Emily in Paris” actress Lily Collins, who plays the titular character Emily Cooper, shared photos of her and co-star Ashley Park in Italy during filming. “Joy ride to and from work with the best…,” she captioned the Instagram post.
The series, created by “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, follows Chicago girl Cooper after she’s hired to provide an American perspective at a marketing firm in Paris.
However, the series began venturing into Italy during Season 4. The fifth season is expected to be filmed entirely in Rome and Venice.
“Emily in Paris” Season 5 is set to drop on Netflix on Dec. 18.
