Geopolitical tensions between Canada and the States might be on the rise, but at least Katy Perry is conducting some friendly diplomacy on our behalf. In footage obtained by TMZ, the newly single pop star was spotted dining in Montreal with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau. If this sounds like a Mad Libs pairing of public figures, it certainly is, but I can confirm that Perry, singer of patriotic anthems like “Firework” and “California Gurls,” was indeed seated across from the 53-year-old politician. Trust me, I’d know that perfectly coiffed mop of hair anywhere.
Per the outlet, an eyewitness spotted the two of them drinking cocktails and sharing plates at Le Violon Monday night, as security guards watched through a mirror. In between courses (one of which was apparently lobster), Perry plopped her head in her hands and nodded vigorously as she listened to Trudeau, who was probably trying out his very best rendition of “O Canada” to impress her.
TMZ reached out to Danny Smiles, the chef at Le Violon, who revealed that the pair enjoyed the restaurant’s tasting menu and were “super chill.” When asked if he thought there was something romantic going on, Smiles was hesitant to be definitive. “I think it’s friendly, but the restaurant’s a romantic setting,” he said. “It’s hard to say.”
Here’s something that might help us decide: After dinner, Perry and Trudeau went out for drinks at a rooftop bar. Once again, TMZ scored the footage. The site published a short clip of the pair walking through the bar and wrote that Trudeau’s arm was “practically welded to Katy’s waist.” You can’t really see that in the video, but we can take TMZ’s word for it.
Right now, it’s looking more and more like these two were in fact on a date. Sure, Perry’s Lifetimes Tour is currently making its way through the Great White North, stopping in Ottawa Tuesday night and back to Montreal after that, so maybe it is just a casual meetup. Then again, she’s also going through a very public breakup from Orlando Bloom, and Trudeau separated from his wife, Sophie, in 2023 after 18 years together. So the circumstances are kind of perfect. Dual citizenship, here she comes.
