Apple’s new brain-controlled iPhone, iPad tech revealed in video

Earlier this year Apple shared early details of its forthcoming plans to support brain-controlled technology for iPhone, iPad, and more. Now, a new video has been published showing the first live demonstration of the tech.

Apple has long been at the forefront of prioritizing accessibility across its various devices. And the latest initiative on that front is especially cutting edge.

As was first detailed this spring, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and more include support for brain control in users with supported neural implants.

Apple is developing ways for Brain Computer Interfaces (BCIs) to translate those brain signals into the ability to select, control, and manipulate iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro interfaces. The Synchron BCI is implanted in the brain’s motor cortex, specifically on the surface of the blood vessel, using a minimally invasive endovascular procedure that involves inserting a catheter through the jugular vein.

A Wall Street Journal report on the technology included quotes from Mark Jackson, an early tester of Synchron’s implant who has ALS.

Now, Synchron has published a video featuring Jackson controlling his iPad entirely with his thoughts.

In this groundbreaking demo, Mark, who lives with ALS, navigates his iPad home screen, opens apps, and composes messages using only his mind. Synchron’s Kurt Haggstrom and Peter Yoo explain the BCI HID protocol and how the Stentrode™ system enables native, thought-driven control of Apple devices.

Jackson is a member of Synchron’s FDA-approved trial of the company’s Stentrode implant. Stentrode uses electrodes to read brain signals. As of May, it had been implanted in 10 people so far.
