As a female runner, I’ll never understand why brands load the best safety features on the biggest watches. This week, Garmin launched the Fenix 8 Pro, which has satellite and LTE connectivity, designed to keep you safe on the trails if your phone dies. However, there’s no 43mm Fenix 8 Pro model, as there is in the regular Fenix 8 line.
The same applies to the Apple Watch Ultra — it’s the best Apple Watch, by far, for runners, and the customizable Action Button makes a huge difference. It’s also got the Siren app, which rings an 86-decibel alarm that can be heard up to 180 meters away — a feature that makes me feel safer on the run.
However, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the largest wearable the brand has on offer, and it’s also the heaviest, despite an all-titanium case. It’s only available in one size — 49mm. For those who have smaller wrists, it can look ludicrously large, and can be downright uncomfortable.
Considering that female runners face more safety issues then men, I wish that all of these features — whether it’s Apple or Garmin — were available in a watch that’s more suited to my physique.
With the rumored Apple Watch Ultra 3 just days away (Apple’s Awe Dropping event is happening September 9, 2025), the one upgrade I’m dreaming of is a lighter, smaller version of Apple’s rugged adventure watch.
I’ve worn the Apple Watch Ultra for years, but I often remove the watch to sleep, as I find it digs into my wrists and just feels too big. I’d love it if Apple followed the sizing model of its standard watch and offered two different sizes. Unfortunately, having covered the Apple Watch Ultra 3 rumors for months, this seems unlikely.
Right now, the biggest Apple Watch Ultra 3 design rumor is that the model will retain the 49mm case size, but with a slightly larger display.
According to MacRumors, the iOS 26 beta includes imagery of the new Apple Watch Ultra 3, with a larger display size and a display resolution of 422 x 514. The current Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a 410 x 502 resolution.
Rumors also suggest that the Ultra 3 might feature satellite connectivity, a new chip, and blood pressure monitoring. As a fitness editor and marathon runner, the potential update I’m most excited about for the Ultra 3 and the Apple Watch 11 is the revamped Health app.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on a major Health app revamp, which is code-named Project Mulberry. This update will see the app give users actionable insights based on their data, as well as an AI health coach that would provide recommendations.
The good news is, while I might not get the Apple Watch Ultra 3 of my dreams, we don’t have long to wait to see what’s changed. Stay tuned as Tom’s Guide will be bringing you all the Apple news as it drops.
