Apple Watch Ultra 3 sounds like it will be very much worth the wait

Last year, Apple was rumored to launch a new Apple Watch Ultra—but it didn’t. Instead, we only got a black finish for the existing Ultra 2. Now, with an Apple Watch Ultra 3 upgrade truly around the corner, it’s increasingly sounding like it will be very much worth the wait.

Two-year wait for Apple Watch Ultra 3 will result in bigger upgrades

As far as Apple products go, Apple Watch Ultra is a relative newcomer. The first model launched in 2022, with a second-gen landing a year later in 2023.

Expectations were that we would continue getting annual Ultra updates, just like we do with the standard Apple Watch ‘Series’ models.

But last year, Apple opted to skip a new Ultra.

When Apple Watch Ultra 3 finally arrives—likely next month—it will come with higher expectations due to the longer update cycle.

Based on the latest rumors though, Apple seems set to deliver a big upgrade.

Features are expected to include:

  • Larger display
  • S11 SiP
  • Satellite connectivity for messaging
  • High blood pressure detection
  • 5G cellular
  • Always-on refreshes every second due to LTPO3
  • Wide-angle OLED

The last two on the list are playing catch-up to Apple Watch Series 10. But for the most part, the Ultra 3’s upgrades will be brand new for Apple Watch models.

And this is just what we know about so far.

It’s very possible Apple could give the Ultra 3 even better battery life than its predecessors. If the new, larger display comes with a bigger case size, that extra space could provide more battery.

Additional battery life is already coming to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see Apple’s other best-in-class battery device extend its lead.

Apple Watch Ultra’s latest upgrade should easily top its last

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Looking at the Apple Watch Ultra 3 features above, even with no additional surprises, these upgrades clearly top the changes Apple made with its second-gen model.

Advantages of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 over its predecessor were minimal: a slightly better SiP, brighter display, and a couple software additions. The 1-year upgrade timeline resulted in more of a spec bump update.

This year, Apple Watch Ultra 3 seems poised to easily offer the most compelling upgrade yet.
