Apple TV+ Leads Final Emmy Predictions With The Studio and Adolescence

Television’s awards season is nearing its grand finale, with the Creative Arts Emmys taking place over two nights this weekend, leading into the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 14. The main ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.

Apple TV+ enters the night with unprecedented momentum. Its critically acclaimed psychological thriller “Severance” leads all programs with 27 nominations. HBO Max’s “The Penguin,” a gritty Batman spinoff, follows with 24. Meanwhile, Apple’s dark comedy “The Studio” — the razor-sharp satire of Hollywood — tied the all-time record for most comedy series nominations with 23.

Many industry pundits project a historic showing for Apple TV+, with many predicting it will take home both drama (“Severance”) and comedy series (“The Studio”). Variety is inclined to agree. If achieved, it would mark the first time one network has won both top races since HBO accomplished the feat in 2016 with “Game of Thrones” and “Veep.”

If our predictions hold, “The Studio” will lead all shows with 12 wins, followed by “Severance” and “The Penguin” with nine each. Netflix’s “Adolescence,” the moving psychological limited series, is forecast to collect eight including the top miniseries race. NBC’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” could round out the top five with a projected six statuettes.

On the platform level, Netflix is projected to top the leaderboard with 25 total wins, edging out Apple TV+ (24) and HBO Max (23). The latter set an all-time nomination record with 142. The record for most wins is shared between CBS and Netflix who both won 44 in 1974 and 2021.

Other networks rounding out the top five would be NBC following with 11, then Disney+ and Peacock with six and five, respectively.

“The Pitt”
HBO Max

“Severance” is expected to collect big wins in directing (Ben Stiller), writing (“Cold Harbor” by Dan Erickson) and cinematography for double nominee Jessica Lee Gagné. However, we can’t count out HBO Max’s freshman medical drama “The Pitt.” Going into the Emmys, the show recently won program of the year at the Television Critics Association Awards, an accolade that has often predicted Emmy upsets, including past shockers like Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Prime Video’s “Fleabag.”

Meanwhile, “The Penguin” remains a viable spoiler in the limited series space, especially for Colin Farrell’s lead performance that could also bring in co-star Cristin Milioti, if she can manage to sneak past Michelle Williams for FX’s “Dying for Sex.” The dark comic thriller also leads projections in makeup, production design, prosthetics, sound editing and visual effects.

And in the guest drama actor category, a win for 86-year-old Scott Glenn (“The White Lotus”) would make him the oldest acting winner in the category ever, surpassing James Whitmore, who won at age 78 for “The Practice” in 2000.

CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” widely expected to win talk series, could finally break its Emmy curse. The long-running show is currently zero for 33 at the Emmys, making it the second-most nominated show without a win — just behind “Better Call Saul” (zero for 53).

Comedian Adam Sandler could also make history for himself. The “SNL” alum is double-nominated for his Netflix special “Adam Sandler: Love You” and the “SNL50” song “50 Years.” A win in either category would mark his first-ever Emmy victory.

NBC’s “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” is a frontrunner in Variety Special (Live), as well as Directing and Writing for a Variety Special. Netflix is expected to sweep documentary and animation categories, with “Simone Biles: Rising,” “Will and Harper” and “Arcane” all favored.

In reality categories, Peacock’s “The Traitors” is predicted to win both Competition Program and Reality Host (Alan Cumming). “Love on the Spectrum” leads unstructured reality predictions, while ABC’s “Shark Tank” continues its structured reality reign.
