Apple has a bit of catching up to do in the mobile AI space. The company has made some progress with Apple Intelligence but it has lost much of the limelight to its Android competitors, particularly Samsung, which has been pushing Galaxy AI to the best of its ability over the past couple of years.
The company has recognized the need to elevate the AI capabilities of its entry-level iPhone model, which competes directly with Samsung’s base Galaxy S flagship, and it will do that with Samsung’s help.
Apple may finally be getting serious about mobile AI
Apple’s higher end models launched this year, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, both have 12GB of RAM. On the other hand, the base iPhone 18 comes with 8GB of RAM. The company reportedly wants to bump up even the base model to 12GB next year so that it’s able to run on-device AI models more effectively.
Samsung is one of the Apple’s core suppliers for LPDDR5X memory. Apple has reportedly asked Samsung to increase the supply of these memory chips for next year’s iPhone lineup, supporting rumors that the base iPhone will be get a memory bump.
Since Samsung only makes LPDDR5X memory in 12GB and 16GB modules, the conclusion being drawn here is quite evident. This year’s Galaxy S25 series offers 12GB of RAM across the entire lineup.
Apple may also switch up its launch windows to better compete against Samsung’s Galaxy S series next year. It’s believed that the base iPhone 18 model will arrive in the Spring, much closer to when Samsung launches its new flagship lineup, while the high-end Pro and Pro Max models will arrive in the traditional Fall timeframe.
