Apple has quietly cancelled the release of The Savant, which was set to hit Apple TV+ this Friday, September 26. However, as of today, the Jessica Chastain series no longer has a release date. Apple has pulled mentions of the show’s launch from its social media channels, and if you check in the TV app itself, it now simply says “coming at a later date”.
The reason why the show has been pulled from the schedule is not entirely clear …
The plot of the series is still somewhat under wraps as it has not yet aired, although it is believed to revolve around Chastian’s character infiltrating radical online groups to find and stop acts of terrorism.
It is possible that plot points overlap too closely with the recent real-world events of the Charlie Kirk assassination, which remains a contentious topic in media.
When the trailer for the series was released in August, it also got a lot of backlash by some about its apparent portrayal of political matters. Some suggested it was a biased representation of extremism, or a misrepresentation of right-wing ideologies. There was also a fair share of misogynistic critiques that thought it was far-fetched that a woman could do the job of inveigling herself in online ‘incel’ groups without detection.
Whatever the reason, the facts are the show will no longer be premiering on September 26. If you were looking forward to the release, this will of course be disappointing and we don’t know how long you’ll now have to wait for it to air.
In fact, this is not the first Apple TV+ title to be indefinitely delayed from release.
The third season of popular international thriller Tehran wrapped production back in 2023, but the Apple TV+ release date has been on hold ever since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Season three actually aired in full on the Israel Kan 11 network in December 2024, but Apple has remained mum on when we can expect a worldwide streaming release.
Update: Without providing further context surrounding the decision, Apple confirmed to Deadline: “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date.”
