And just like that, And Just Like That… is coming to an end on HBO Max.
The show will wrap up its 12-episode third season, which is currently airing, with a two-part finale. Showrunner Michael Patrick King notified cast of the decision yesterday, per our sources.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex And The City universe is coming to an end,” said King in a statement released this morning. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop. Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season. It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
Premiering in December 2021, And Just Like That… is a sequel to the iconic HBO series Sex and the City, created by Darren Star, which reunited gal pals Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) for a series of midlife romantic adventures in New York City.
The show’s first season saw protagonist Carrie navigating life after the sudden death of her husband, Mr. Big (Chris Noth), while Miranda dealt with an identity crisis, including a relationship with non-binary comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), and Charlotte embraced motherhood. In Season 2, premiering in 2023, Carrie rekindled her romance with former fiancé Aidan (John Corbett), Miranda deepened her connection with Che, and Charlotte faced challenges with family. This season, meanwhile, Carrie moves on from Aidan, as Miranda explores new relationships, and Charlotte continues to juggle motherhood and career.
While And Just Like That… started strong in terms of ratings, with a premiere ranking among the top 10 in HBO Max’s history, viewership has wained over time. The Season 3 premiere was watched by just 429,000 households, per Samba TV, down from 463,000 in Season 2.
And Just Like That… was developed by King, who exec produced alongside John Melfi, Parker, Davis, Nixon, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. The original HBO series, Sex and the City, adapted the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell. Others in the cast of the sequel series’ final season included Mehcad Brooks, Jonathan Cake, Logan Marshall-Green, Sebastian Pigazzi, Dolly Wells, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Christopher Jackson, Niall Cunningham, Cathy Ang and Alexa Swinton.
