ESPN updated its basketball recruiting rankings for the 2027 class on Wednesday evening. There’s a familiar name sitting atop the rankings. Marcus Spears Jr. has been ranked the No. 1 overall player in the class.

Spears Jr. is a 6-foot-7, 180-pound power forward in the 2027 class. He’s from Plano, Texas. His dad, ESPN NFL analyst Marcus Spears, attended LSU before getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

Spears Jr. is currently in contact with major schools like Duke, Kentucky, Texas and others. As the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class, he’ll have his pick of top colleges. His parents are certainly very proud.

ESPN’s “SportsCenter” announced the official recruiting news on Thursday afternoon.

“Breaking: Marcus Spears Jr. is the new No. 1 player in the SC NEXT 60 for the Class of 2027,” they announced.

Spears Jr. admitted that his dad, who went No. 20 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, never wanted him to play football.

“I just hung it up and I never went back,” Spears Jr. told ZAGSBLOG.

Spears Jr. has received some basketball advice from his dad, though – play hard, especially on defense, and the rest will take care of itself.

“I play hard,” Spears Jr. said of his game. “I try to let the game come to me. My dad always tells me to get on the defensive side and then the offensive side will come. So I try to focus on defense and then the offense will come.”

The advice certainly seems to be working. Spears Jr. has risen up to No. 1 overall in the class of 2027 rankings according to ESPN. He looks like a future NBA player.

Marcus Spears and his wife, must be extremely happy.
