Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Gets Benchmarked in Geekbench; Delivers up to 11% Higher Single-Threaded and up to 16% Higher Multi-Threaded Performance Threadripper 7980X
AMD’s newest Threadripper 9000 lineup is now being benchmarked more frequently as we approach its retail launch. From the Threadripper 9000X series to Threadripper PRO 9000WX, we are seeing regular benchmark leaks of the new Zen 5 processors on various platforms. If you remember, the Threadripper 9980X, which is the flagship Zen 5 workstation CPU in the 9000X lineup, recently broke world record in achieving the highest score at PassMark.
The same CPU is now comfortably beating its predecessor at Geekbench, delivering decent generational uplifts. The processor scored 3259 points in single-threaded and 28,666 points in multi-threaded tests at Geekbench, which is a popular tool that PC users usually go for to test their CPU prowess. While it isn’t the most accurate tool, it gives us a rough idea about a CPU’s position in the CPU hierarchy.
When compared to the predecessor, i.e., the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X, the 9980X is about 11% faster in single-threaded and 16% faster in multi-threaded tests. Here, we chose one of the best benchmark numbers for the 7980X, as the average is even lower. Ryzen Threadripper 9980X brings the same core count of 64 cores and 128 threads as the 7980X, but these cores are based on the latest Zen 5 architecture, which is further accompanied by higher clock speeds.
The processor features a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a boost clock of up to 5.4 GHz, which is 300 MHz higher than the 7980X. The TDP remains the same at 350W, and therefore, considering both CPUs consume the same amount of power at max load, the 9980X delivers superior performance per watt. AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 9980X is created for enthusiasts who need the power of dozens of cores for crunching big numbers or carrying out intensive professional workloads.
For enterprises, the Threadripper PRO 9000WX series is even more powerful since it offers up to 96 cores and 192 threads of configuration. These processors should be launched for sale before the end of this month, as some retailers have started listing them for pre-orders.
