Allison Janney & Bradley Whitford Upped To Series Regulars

We’ll be seeing even more of Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford in The Diplomat.

Ahead of the series’ Season 3 premiere, Netflix just revealed that the two West Wing alums have been promoted to series regulars for Season 4 of the political thriller drama starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, which was ordered in May.

Janney was introduced in the second half of Season 2 as Vice President Grace Penn, becoming president in the final seconds of the season finale. She continues to recur in Season 3, joined by Whitford, who plays her husband, First Gentleman Todd Penn.

Janney and Whitford both worked with The Diplomat series creator Debora Cahn on NBC’s Emmy-laden political drama The West Wing.

“Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off the charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … it’s an insane bag of candy,” said Cahn. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”

Season 3 of The Diplomat picks up in the aftermath of the dramatic Season 2 finale, in which Ambassador Kate Wyler (Russell) lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn (Janney) of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the president is dead, Kate’s husband Hal (Sewell) may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world.

The Diplomat is executive-produced by Cahn alongside Janice Wiliams, Russell, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.

Season 3 of The Diplomat premieres globally on Netflix on October 16.
