After nearly 30 years, South Park still knows how to cause a stir. In the recent Season 27 premiere, the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, spoofed President Donald Trump, placing him in precarious situations with Satan, but it’s the second episode of the season that is drawing a huge crowd.
On Aug. 6, the episode titled “Got a Nut” debuted on Comedy Central and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, garnered nearly double the viewers the premiere episode, “Sermon on the ‘Mount’ had. The episode not only continued to mock the president, but this time included jabs at Vice President J.D. Vance, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The episode drew 838,000 viewers during its Aug. 6 premiere on Comedy Central. In comparison, the July 23 Season 27 premiere saw 430,000 viewers on the cable network. The second episode’s viewership was the third-highest linear numbers in the past three seasons of South Park.
“Got a Nut” is behind the March 2023 Season 26 episode “Deep Learning,” which spoofed the use of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, which had had 1.04 million viewers in its initial airing. Coming in second place is the Season 25 premiere, “Pajama Day,” from February 2022, which had 844,000 viewers.
Not only is South Park dominating in the linear viewership category, but it is also exploding on streaming. It’s currently the No. 1 show on Paramount+ worldwide and in the U.S., per FlixPatrol. The season premiere episode grew to 5.9 million viewers after just three days of streaming on Paramount+ and other streaming services. With numbers like that, the Aug. 6 episode is likely to top the premiere when the streaming numbers are released.
“Got a Nut,” which featured Noem as a plastic surgery-obsessed dog killer, was also the No. 2 prime-time show on Aug. 6 with adults aged 18 to 49. That key demographic had about 455,000 of the total 838,000 viewers for the episode.
Political Figures Respond to the Latest South Park Season
Following the Aug. 6 episode, Vance, who was depicted as Trump’s servant in the show, took to X to comment on the episode. The Vice President quoted a post from the official South Park account and captioned it, “Well, I’ve finally made it.”
Noem had a different reaction to the show, which she made clear in an appearance on Glenn Beck’s podcast. Noem admitted she had not seen the episode, but slammed her depiction on the show. “But it’s so lazy to constantly make fun of women for how they look. It’s always the liberals and the extremists who do that. If they wanted to criticize my job, go ahead and do that, but clearly they can’t. They just pick something petty like that,” Noem said.
The Trump White House also criticized the season premiere after it aired, with White House Assistant Press Secretary Taylor Rogers saying in a statement, “Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.”
Days before the second episode of the current South Park season premiered on Comedy Central, the official X account for the Department of Homeland Security posted a still photo from the episode paired with a recruitment link to join ICE. The post prompted a bit of trolling from the official South Park X account, which then quoted the Department of Homeland Security’s post with the caption, “Wait, so we ARE relevant? #eatabagofd**ks.”
New episodes of South Park premiere weekly on Comedy Central. The entire series is streaming on Paramount+.
