Former NFL star J.J. Watt cautioned against reporters and fans taking too much stock in training camp stats on Thursday morning. That is wise advice for those checking in on Aaron Rodgers’s first training camp practice with the Steelers.
Rodgers made his long-anticipated Pittsburgh training camp debut Thursday afternoon, making a dramatic march down the hill to the practice field at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. to get the summer with his third NFL franchise underway. Minutes later, to start 11-on-11 drills, Rodgers took a shotgun snap, quickly looked left to his new No. 1 target DK Metcalf in the flat, and fired.
Interception, Patrick Queen.

It was an ugly first rep for Rodgers, as the former All-Pro linebacker read the quarterback and immediately jumped the quick throw to Metcalf.
Of course, as Watt says, this is what training camp is for: working out the kinks and developing chemistry. Rodgers and Metcalf have worked out a bit, even before the quarterback signed to play in Pittsburgh, but it would be unfair to assume the two would already have the unspoken bond that Rodgers previously formed with Packers stars like Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.
This is the internet, though, so expect to see plenty of this early lowlight over the next few days, at least until Rodgers bumps it from the headlines with his first electric touchdown pass or successful Hail Mary.
