The worst-kept secret in the games industry right now, the remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, is reportedly going to make major changes to the overall experience.
According to French outlet Jeux Vidéo Magazine, Ubisoft is going so far as to completely remove the modern-day story sections and replace them with more narrative for protagonist Edward Kenway. Gameplay will supposedly be more like recent Assassin’s Creed titles, with RPG elements added along with loot drops and gear stats for Edward’s weapons and armour.
The explorable map will not be any bigger than what was in the original, according to the video, but the islands you can reach on your pirate ship will reportedly contain more activities to take part in and side quests to complete. When you switch between the ship and setting foot on land, you apparently won’t need to deal with any load screens either.
Finally, the outlet claims that the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake is currently targeting an early 2026 launch, but it may slip to later in the year.
This report lines up with previous suggestions of the project being much more than just a graphical update. Past claims have said there’ll be new gameplay systems and more mechanics relating to combat, wildlife, and the ecosystem. The rumours of an Assassin’s Creed 4 remake have been doing the rounds since summer 2023, and Ubisoft has at least confirmed it has some kind of remake from the series’ past in the works.
A year ago, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the French company is working on remakes to “allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernise them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich”.
