There are few men more involved in college football than Kirk Herbstreit. On Monday, the ESPN College GameDay host revealed his top five teams in the country.
Week 3 brought a whirlwind of unexpected results across the college football landscape. Five ranked teams fell, including two losses against unranked opponents. Along with Chris Fowler, Herbstreit called Georgia‘s 44-41 win over Tennessee in overtime.
Of course, Herbstreit kept up with the rest of Week 3 slate as well. With five teams to cover, let’s get into Herbstreit’s latest college football rankings.
LSU’s defense shined again this weekend in the Tigers’ 20-10 win over Florida. LSU squeezed a career-high five interceptions out of Florida quarterback DJ Lagway. It was impressive work for the Tigers’ defense, which was on the field nearly two-thirds of the game.
While LSU’s offense ultimately doubled Florida’s scoring output, it still has room to improve. Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who was a favorite to win the Heisman during the preseason, completed just 15-of-his-27 pass attempts for 220 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing an interception.
The Nittany Lions haven’t given Herbstreit any reason to doubt them yet. Penn State is 3-0 and boasts an average win margin of 38.8 points per game. In Penn State’s most recent outing, it dominated Villanova in a 52-6 blowout.
In the win, Penn State running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton were spectacular, combining for 170 rushing yards and three touchdowns. If quarterback Drew Allar can catch fire during Big Ten play, the Nittany Lions could have a conference championship in their future.
Of course, Ohio State won’t make it easy for Penn State to take home any Big Ten hardware. The Buckeyes have been ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 since defeating Texas in Week 1, and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon.
On Saturday, Ohio State routed Ohio, 37-9. In the win, star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith reeled in nine catches for a team-high 153 yards and a touchdown. Carnell Tate didn’t trail far behind, racking up five catches for 101 yards and a score.
The Hurricanes ran away with a 49-12 triumph over USF on Saturday. It was a statement win for Miami, considering USF defeated in-state rival Florida in Week 2.
There was never a doubt in the battle. Miami quarterback Carson Beck looked like an ACC Offensive Player of the Year candidate, tallying 340 yards and three touchdowns, compared to two interceptions. Meanwhile, RB Mark Fletcher Jr. racked up 120 rushing yards and two carries against the Bulls.
Georgia almost lost to Tennessee on Saturday. Thankfully for the Bulldogs, “almost” doesn’t show up in the win column. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 23-of-his-31 pass attempts for 304 yards and two TDs in the win.
He had no shortage of options out-wide. Three Georgia receivers logged more than 50 receiving yards. Alas, for Georgia to move up in Herbstreit’s rankings, its defense must step up. The Bulldogs gave up 496 total yards of offense to Tennessee in the narrow win.
